I agree about evading any dual gpu solution ,you don't want to hear aircraft engines inside your case. While in 5870 you can go something like sapphire vapor-x cahmbre which isn't available yet for 5970. @ Judas , tried control panel and it didn't work with 4870x2 for the first gpu.
you don't disable the first GPU.... that's your primary display..... you disable the 2nd one.. Once the 2nd one is disabled.. Crossfire is disabled and the card acks like a single GPU video card. This also allows you to keep catalyst AI enabled so that games that require it or gain from it aren't negatively effected. I've done this with the 3870/4870/5970 video cards and it works just fine.
Oh well.. it's decided. Next week I'm getting a Powercolor HD5870 PCS+. Don't want to wait an extra month for the Vapor-X. Since they're quite similar in ways of cooling I think they're more or less equal.
I know I trust Sapphire quality over all others. At least from personal experience. Perhaps the PCS+ is better, I don't know.
Liqourice , there is a review for both on HH , I have a powercolor card (non pcs+) and it solid . Also check the warranty period on both sapphire and powercolor.
Well, that review is if 5770's but I see your point. In that the sapphire works better. Warranty is of no importance since that's covered by law for 2 years no matter what the respective company offers.
its hardly a waste...... just call it excessive but it will definitely power demanding games well and its a much better value than 2 5870s i would get the 5970 if the budget permits it.... better in the long run
Downside with the 5970 is the reference cooler. Noisy bugger and less effective, but of course I could replace it..
I have a 4870 in my PC. I bought a second one when I upgraded to a 1920x1080 res, rather than getting a 5000 series because it cost me £90 for the second one, whereas a 5870 is over £300 for a marginally better performance. No DX11 but by performance comparison there was no justification for getting the 5000 series card. At 1680x1050 the 4870 in CF is still one of the top perfomers. At 1920x1080 the 5970 pulls off ahead a bit more. If you're a glutton for performance go for the 5970, otherwise (minus the DX11) two 4870s work out cheaper for a performance that's not too far off for a lot less cash. This is not taking into consideration Nvidia, mind...
They are talking desktop, but there happens to be a mobile version for the 5870. Keep in mind that the mobile ones, despite their sharing the same model number, are nowhere as powerful. Which is expected.
Expected because both companies lie their asses off. Much slower, reduced number of components, reduced speed, reduced performance. Again, this is for both Nvidia and ATI mobile cards.
still think your biggest performance to price ratio will be the 5770.... specially when you jam more then 2 in the rigg
