Out of those two, I'd say get the AMD, but if you were to get something like... the 1.8A P4 and overclock THAT, then I'd say intel.

    RAM 2X Kingston PC1066 128mb........= $154
    Mobo GA-8IHXP ......................= $182
    CPU 2.26ghz 533fsb northwood........= $253

I think this setup would probably give you the best performance for your money, and the price would be close to an atlhon xp 2200+ setup.

It really all depends on money.. right now, Intel has the fastest chip on the market (not only in MHz, but also in benchmarks). HOWEVER, the lead Intel has isn't very great, and certainly not what it should be considering the difference in MHz. If you want the absolute fastest thing you can get (without overclocking) TODAY, and money is no object, Intel is the way to go. On the other hand, if you want high performance at an affordable price, AMD is the best bet.

BTW, does anybody know if AMD is going to be using a new socket anytime soon? I've heard that the t-breds are basically reaching the limit of that style CPU, which makes me wonder how much longer Socket A will be around. This may be a stupid question, but I don't really keep up on AMD news since I don't own one... yet.

    price for 2200+

The lowest price I see for AMD 2200+ is $216, and just for a little bit more you can get the 2.26ghz p4!!!!! Well unless you already have a socket-A motherboard that support xp 2200+, then getting amd is probably a better idea.
