AMD Radeon 6870 and 6850 Review
    _____________________________

Today we have a number of brand new AMD 6800 Series cards on our test bench and will be putting them through a selection of real world tests including standard gaming, Eyefinity gaming, Stereo 3D gaming using the latest Zalman 3D monitor, 3D Blu-Ray playback and GPU computing to see where they find themselves in the marketplace.

This is what I was looking for.
    Both review (excellent) and hardware/price.

I was never interested in hardware physx (I prefer havok anyway) or 3D gaming with glasses, so the negative points (valid for those who care about them) don't mean anything to me.

Feeling that the 6900 series will be at least 50% more for the lower models, I see myself getting a 6870 as soon as I can afford it (January?)

    Great review guys,

    So 5870 > 6870?
    All together now: OOPS!

    Nice monitor :)

Well, it's faster, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is better.
Here the 5870 is double the price of a 6870. IF you are lucky.
For what, 10% boost in speed in most cases for 1920 and lower resolutions?
For me there is no contest. The 6870 is the far better choice. So, in some games you are not going to get 49 fps but 44...bfd! :)

BTW, are there any monitors with 1.4 hdmi yet?

I already have a buyer for my current HD5770 and, as soon as there is a HD6870 on the shelf locally, I'll be picking one of them up.

The person buying my HD5770 is also buying my current DP->VGA adapter as I won't be able to use it on the newer card.

My actual main reason to go with an newer card at this time is for the benefit of 256-bit memory bus over the 128-bit on the HD5770.

Unquestionably, the price for performance is a heck of a lot better but why not call it the 6875 or something? 6870 implies that it's the successor to the 5870. While the technology's newer (hence the 6), the speed is less so they could've knocked a digit off the end.
4870 is faster than the 3870, 5870 is faster than 4870, 6870 is slower than 5870...

For the record, the 6870 by Sapphire is just under £175 here, whereas the 5870 is just under £275 so yeah, no question.

I agree with you about the name change. I don't get it unless it is a cheap trick to "fool" some people thinking they are getting the X870 equivalent for so much lower price. Which sucks.

I can't give updated prices here because for some reason the shops have removed any mentioning of them. Perhaps they are waiting next week, who knows.

I do wonder though what the price of the 6900 series will be and its speed.

Luckily we don't have to wait that long ;)

I reviewed the Sapphire 6850 and the price/performance is pretty damn good. The performance is quite close to the 5850 for a lot less. I agree with the name confusion though, but AMD is probably planning on having a lot more cards released for the sub $160 market (I'm speculating here). Tessellation has improved a lot compared to 5800 series although still not as good as Nvidia I guess (2 vs 4). I would love to see the "AMD optimized" tessellated games that are coming out to see if AMD's "smart" tessellation implementation really is making a difference.

Either i missed it somehow or it wasn't covered..

    but

Can we get some more specific info on the monitor connectivity options, what worked what didn't..

    Active/Passive DP adapter?

How many display really can be enabled at once?

I only counted 5 display outputs.... being 2x mini dp, 1x hdmi, 2x dvi..

How do you get 6 out of this?

Using a generic cheap Passive DP~>dvi Adapter, attached to the minidp adpter... no problemos selecting the display device for surround view?

So the powercolor is the only one provided a minidp-dp adapter....

Can you use 3 displays only using the 2xdvi and 1x hdmi in surround view?

IMO we need more clarification on the various combinations of surround view 3 display or more setup configuration using generic everyday passive dp adapters.

You can use the two DVI and 2 miniDP for 4, but I don't know about the 6. Perhaps a typo?

Display outputs and the number which can be used in Eyefinity is down to the manufacturers.

In terms of Generics, DP 1.2 allows users to connect more than one screen to a single connector (a chain of screens) provided the hardware is manufactured with this in mind. So from the two DP 1.2 connectors on the 6870 you can connect 6 screens (3 to each) or mix it up a bit and go 4 screens on the DP 1.2 (through a MST hub) and two on the DVIs.

Its even possible to mix resolutions so you could run 4 screens of the mini DP, one at 1920x1080, one 1680x1050, one 1280x720 and another at 2560x1600 (random choices).

I just checked, the 6850 here is sold for 184 euros and the 6870 for 240 euros.
    I have 40 euros. Hmmm
Anyone want to buy a 4870X2 which might have an issue of overheating for 200 euros? I will give a free MS sidewinder mouse with it (the first version, slightly used)

I would like to play Leisure Suit Larry on them. It will be like I am inside the mini market.

Aweesome review. was the first I read on these cards :D

I'm very impressed with the power usage of these cards under load, improving on the 5870 and 5850, even on idle and CF load.

Got myself a new psu, so im considering 1 or 2 of these cards, or wait for 6900...

    Question here -

I have a late 2009 27 inch iMac. I'm looking to build a custom PC and was curious as to whether this video card installed in my new custom PC would be compatible with my 27 inch iMac as a monitor? I want to use my 27 inch iMac as my monitor for my new PC.

Any help with this would be great!

    Thanks.
