On Wednesday night AVG pushed an update for its popular anti-virus product, however instead of enhancing and correcting bugs for the program, it left 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista inoperable.

all the systems i built were fine...

however almost ALL of the prebuilt systems both ASUS and dell and compaq and such..... seemed to have failed....

cannot access windows via safe mode on them.... can't do a directory services restore.....can't do last known good configuration, can't do piss bugger all except go into the "repair" available.

after which you get in there.... and if you do a system restore to the most RECENT time, even if it's just a flash update, or something useless and shouldn't impact it..... it will proceed.... then state that it was unable to do it..... then just restart and voila....

    it's quite bizarre

Again... Why do people use AVG? It's clearly shitty compared to Avast or even MSSE.

Because Avast on countless machines i've installed it on.. BSODs the moment you boot up for almost all of them for reasons even avast can't seem to figure out specifically...... so what's shittier.... avg which has had a relatively spotless track record....... vs avast

    and MSSE?.... bleh....

AVG 2011 free eddition is damn fast, and does a damn good job.... for free....

hell of alot better then norton or mcafee that's for sure..

Clearly you havent used MSSE, I had avg and it was good, but since I've changed to msse there is no comparison, much faster, detects more intrusions, and a lot simpler. the new beta version is even better. go look for some AV tests, its the best free AV out there. ;) (maybe lacks some features though)

    Wow...

Incredibly glad I switched to Avast only a few weeks ago, hugely lucky.

What's the solution here for those effected?

    Interesting.
My mother's laptop which had AVG for a couple of years, recently stopped working. By stopped working I mean it was completely gone. Like it was never installed.

    Antivir FTW!

Actually the latest Norton is among the best. It's not bloatware like it used to be, it constantly a highscore in benchmark test of AV solutions and it also got some of the best detection rates.

I've been using Avast Free and Pro for years now on countless machines and never had any problems with it.

My machine didn't have any BSOD or boot up problems last week, but I did encounter an issue in which I couldn't start the AVG Resident Shield module. I guess it was related to this issue.

60 computers i've installed 2011 on.... all my own custom built or my own version of windows installed.. and no problems..

12 computers with either dell/hp/compaq/ and unfortunately even 1 Asus laptop.... experienced this issue..

I would LIKE to know what has caused this.... because i don't think AVG is completely responcible... something didn't quite agree with it.. because if all these machines i've setup myself with my own windows 7 installation style setup have had ZERO problems..... then clearly, something in the prebuilt system or something that was installed before hand is not working with avg and causing the boot issues..

i would love to know what
