"A DVD which "self-destructs" will be sent to voters of the Cesar Awards in France, it has been reported. The move follows a row in the US over the use of preview discs, which the industry says can prompt piracy. The US film industry banned the sending of preview discs to award voters, but this was later challenged in court. The DVD of Gus Van Sant's film Elephant turns black and becomes unusable with two days of being played, reports industry website Screen Daily. The DVDs, which are designed to be disposable, will be sent to members of France's Academie des Arts et Techniques du Cinema, said the report." Source: BBC
I heard about these DVD's a few months ago- they just started making them. Back then it was said that they were going to be used as video rentals, so you didn't have to return the disc. I hope they stay in France.
not really a problem just means you have only 2 days to rip it off the dvd and it only take mabe 1 hour.. if anything it'll tick people off and you se a boost in piracy
It is an environmental problem, though. That's just what we need.. more trash for the landfills. - Me
I agree with Drive- Actually 0 it pisses me off enough to go try my hand at "testing for educational purposes" Damn companies trying to tell me what to do with something after I buy it.. Grrrr- When I rent a movie at the video store, and take it home for all my friends to watch with me, do i have to make them all pay full price and send it in to the video store??? NO- what about if I want to watch my movie on the third day???? Grrr- I'll show them, I'll make 10 copies for spite.. And watch them whenever I damn well please. Maybe even next month!! I live on the edge- you can't stop me. (that's about how ridiculous this really is)
That's the way I see it too. People will be like, "Dang, I better copy this sucker as fast as I can", whereas if it never wore out, they may not do that. Essentially, it will cause even MORE people to learn about copying DVD's. Copying DVD's is something I've NEVER done, but I would look into it if they attempted to pull that crap on me. It will cause more problems than it will solve. IMO, it's bass-ackwards thinking on the part of the corporations.
Nailed it right on the head- M0re people will learn how to do it- and will do it more- I never have copied a DVD either- Bit I'm a quick study
I eveli this when i aws sober an now when i'm drunker than an oxen pulling a sled. the will always bee piraettess Sorry for my drunknesssssssssssss.
Rent (or recieve from MPAA for awards review), rip, watch a week later. It's not even a sort-of solution. It will make piracy a lot easier, though. Rent, rip, burn, toss the disc (no returns!).
