    IBM, Sony and Toshiba are widely expected to announce details of the new 'Cell' microprocessor architecture on Monday that may revolutionise home entertainment electronics.

    The first device to use Cell will be the Sony Playstation 3 at some point in 2006. Sony and Toshiba
    also plan on releasing high definition TVs using the chip at the same time.

    Cell is totally different to the x86 technology that powers Intel/AMD chips. In fact it's more similar in architecture to the Power processor core in the IBM chips used by Apple
