It should read 255.255.240.0 but instead it is reading 255.255.255.0 and I cannot get online. I looked around to see if I could change without disabling DHCP but there seems to be no way. I heard there is something in regedit that you can change to edit the subnet mask without disabling the dhcp but I have no idea where. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

Moved : to Windows Operating Systems

I dont think that you can override this. Its DHCP that sets the subnet mask so this is defined by your ISP. You may have to telephone them to find out whats going on. Failing that, post back with more details - OS, pc specs etc.

you count the bytes, how many computers are included in the subnet. Like if you have last 2 bytes off (0), subnet mask is 255.255.255.252 and your subnet can include 3 devices. One more byte off, your subnet mask is 255.255.255.248 and you can have few devices more. One more byte off, will be 255.255.255.240 and so on.

Why did you change the subnet mask in the 1st place? 255.255.0.0 works fine for you, you can make the subnet larger than your ISP tells you, but you probably cannot diminish it.

255.255.0.0 maybe but it is reading 255.255.255.0

I actually uninstall the TCP/IP and adaptars and reinstalled them and it worked fine after.
