Steve has taken a look at a rather unusual looking piece of tech from coolermaster.

"Today we get the chance to look at an accessory item for PC users. What is a Musketeer III you ask? Oddly enough so did I when asked if I would like to review this item. Well where to begin. The Musketeer III is a device that you input your PC audio signal into. Then it will process the audio signal and try to simulate the sound of and old style tube amplifier. If that sounds like a foreign language well then you are far younger than me. A tube amp will provide a very pleasant “warm” sound when compared to a digital sound that can be considered “harsh” by people that consider themselves a true audiophile expert."

Cooler Master are also giving away one of these funky items to a lucky winner in North America. All you have to do is post in this thread "Cooler master and DH ROCK!" - competition will be closed in approximately 3 weeks and will be drawn at random - the winner in north america will get the item directly from cooler master. There is no limit on the amount of times you can enter.

    I am very very confused...
a case and cooling company creates a devices which takes a digital (if you use a soundcard) input to feed a tube amp......

    Confused.... very very confused

No doubting that analog sound still carries more information, more complex overtones - etc. But if this has a tube to modify digital signal - seems lots of the info is already lost. Still very interesting - does the musketeer have a line in for recording? I have some old jazz lp's that I would like to record.

Tube sound is one of those things you get or don't. The quality is either deeper and warmer or a waste of money.

I hear ya, as I mentioned it in my opinion is a novelty item. Also with some eq work I prefer the outcome. I am not aware of what it does exactly but feel it boosts low mid and low frequencies and filters out some high frequencies say between 8K and above but without a scope to analyze the actual output signals it's all just speculation on my part

Chaos does it have any features for recording or does it just run the sound card output through a tube? (Which is an interesting concept, though usually you see the opposite ie recorded anolog and edited in digital).

Well even though I got no clue what the appeal apart from novelty is as you said Chaos, I shall say this:

The sounds of a tube amp is something to behold if you haven't already heard one, I for one think this is an interesting product, one directed to a select user, but interesting none the less.
