I've noticed it...I tend to forget member's screen names when they dont have an avatar. I try not to, but it happens. For whatever reason (maybe I'm a more visual person?) if someone doesn't have an avatar they fly under the radar more.

I got to thinking about this when i was doing the goldmember voting. Some members who have been seriously helpful didn't even cross my mind until someone else mentioned them, and these are members without avatars.

Am I the only one here like that? Do others find that a lack of avatar impacts whether you remember someone or not?

It's funny that of all people you brought this up. But yes, I know what you mean. I prefer talking to people face to face vs. on the phone so in a way having a avatar sort helps me visualize who that person is and what kind of person they are.

    har har.

No I mean like some members have more posts than I do and no avatar at all, and I go "woah wait..." and I have to jog my memory for a minute to remember who they are, even though they were massively helpful members to me at one point or another.

hahahahaha yeahhhhhh i do have a memorable avatar huh?

Nah its nothin serious though I just noticed it and was wondering if anyone else did.

I suspect that for some people its no big deal (especially those who shut off all avatars. I recall a few members doing this back in the day) but I noticed that its harder to remember people without avatars.

well according to Allan, I do have lovely breasts. See my title? courtesy of big Z.

Yes - I *do* find my self taking those with avatars a little more seriously - and less likely spam/trolls because of the minimum post count need to use an avatar..

AND I also think - humans by nature are 'visually' oriented - and its not just you. I think its the 'normal' to react that way...

Personally, i do (not all the time), lol. DH is a community. Avatars is a way to show who you are in a certain way.

No avatar is better than a poor or annoying one for me, but an avatar that works reasonably well with the name and/or is kept over a period of time is certainly great. The name still connects by far the most with me in 9/10 cases.

As quick idea for the limit on avatars I'd go with allowing everyone not just recently joined (1month?) a 100x100 avatar, but with a smaller filesize restriction than today and perhaps no animation privilige. Many different avatar sizes(widths) can get a little messy looking in my view, and by far most animations on forums in general aren't aestethically pleasing.

    LOL you autistic gemini ?
AV or not, post content tends to be what I remember.
although, having said that, there's something about that guy who has like a big nose, or some facial feature for his avatar, like bleeding or whatever, and he's like a total n00b or somethink, and I can't really be arsed and like all whatever..

Yeah, I quite like avatars, I rarely look at usernames of users with avatars, I associate them with the picture instead.

I need to go either win back my amd stock title, or make myself another avatar...

I'm the same way, but it's not avatars it's signatures. I never look on the left really. I read the post then I look at the signature to learn who said it. Most of the time I've glanced down there and I know who wrote it much earlier than finishing the post though.

I have noticed something similar. When someone changes his/her avatar I get all confused, like, "who are you and why I have never seen you before". Doesn't say anything good about my IQ.
