So anyone know why my P4 is faster than comparable Athlon XP's in this bench but the AXP's blow the P4 away in like UT2004?

Because photoshop is primarily concerned with raw processor clock. Photoshop like most of these apps are much faster on P4 based systems.

ive ran tests at home on P4 systems then tried the same setup in work on G4s or G5s and in most functions the P4s are faster (regardless of what Apple claim).

What does photoshop do that it's concerned with Raw Clock speeds whereas UT loves the AMD chips? Is it more instructions per second or what exactly? Linear instructions? I just find it confusing, I'm really happy switching to my P4 from my athlon system, I just wish I understood better why my fav game runs slower on it! ;)

its to do with the instruction sets and photoshop loves the raw clock of the P4 to rip through filters. I know alot has been mentioned about the P4s deeper pipes and how they do "less" per clock, but as you can see with the P4 results in this thread from various members, the integer performance and raw clock eat filters up. There is also the point at 3400mhz compared to an AMDs 2300mhz that will also have an effect.

AMD are very strong wth gaming - they are very effective CPUs with good instruction sets and architecture for gaming. Id still take an EE over any A64 though ;)

    Warning : Mac User here...

    Hello,
I was reading the PCI Express review when I stumbled on the Photoshop bench.
    Well...

I wondered if my Mac could beat the latest intel beast.
    Not so.
In fact, the first run was 64.3 s.

After shutting down everything but the browser and tweaking memory, history settings, etc.
    I fairly consistently get 54s (best 53.9).
For the sake of it, I also ran the bench after disabling 1 proc. : 73s.

    I also walked the bench on my elderly PowerBook G3 400 (640 MB RAM) : 275.8 s. ;-)

    My BiG5 specs:
    Apple PowerMac G5 2x2GHz (PPC 970) last year's model
1.5 GB RAM (DDR 400 dual channel)
    RADEON 9600 64MB
    160 GB Seagate SATA HD

hello, my name's Marco and I made the bench on my computer:

    Pentium 4 2.8E (Prescott - LGA775)
    Ati X600XT 128 Mb
    1024Mb DDR400 (dual channel) (V-Data & Pmi)
    Maxtor 160Go SATA
    Asus P5GD1

    My score is 61.8s

I think it's a good score and the prescott is really a good cpu for digital imaging, but not really for gaming...

Second Test after reboot and clearing processes: 60.5s !! :wtf: coool ..

    Last test reports 60.1s

prescotts and northwoods are great in photoshop due to the high clocks and they also excel in en/decoding.

This may force me to install 7.0 again, just to bench my new P4.
Running a 3.0 with stock cooling, @ 3.6 with a temp of 27 degrees C. Yes, you heard me right, 27 and that was my max!

I'm gonna try pushing it higher after a few weeks of breaking it in...would hate to ruin a new chip by stressing it too hard too fast! But WOW is this thing slick!

I know that but many people says the Prescott is a "marketing demo" for the future of Intel... But the new prescott has anyway a few performances better than Northwood...

(My english is poor, I know...)
