Electronics designers create new 'superchip'

    A NEW computer chip that claims to be up to ten times faster than those in current computers has been unveiled.

    The "Cell", which will power Sony’s PlayStation 3, has been described by its makers as a "supercomputer on a chip", despite being wafer thin and only the size of a postage stamp.

    But critics say that it is limited by its lack of compatibility with other systems.

    Computing and electronics experts IBM, Sony and Toshiba have spent the past four years working together to create the Cell.
