Shame he doesn't overclock. Makes me sad for some reason.

I would also get the 970. Larger cache (12MB), more cores (6), newer process (32nm). It just seems better value, especially when it's free. :D

I don't think that it would have been unfair for you to have won. I don't remember typing that, either. Also, as someone else said, my comments were not aimed at the likes of you, as you've posted here :p

    I didn't really mean this either :p

To clarify, as I seem to have instigated a small amount of confusion: I mean that the giving of the prize has a smaller total positive impact when a non-member wins, because then we don't get to see and discuss the results in as much detail. That doesn't make it unfair, wrong or frustrating, that just makes it a shame.

As it happens, the winner is a forum regular, so I'm delighted :)

Funny thing is the 975 can still be found at a higher price than the 980x.

It could happen with buyers not informed enough.

    Congratulations guys, enjoy your prices!

BTW Baz, you should totally go for the Six Core 970. You will get six cores plus HT, wich will give you twelve virtual cores. Beside of that, your CPU is going to be cooled by a H70, wich is a great cooler and you can actually OC non Extreme Edition CPUs, just be patient, read some guides on how to do that and you can squiz a little bit more performance from that great baby that you have win!

Ah, and the 970 is made with a 32nm manufacturation process vs the 45nm of the 975EE, wich will end in a fresh and more power efficient processor.

    :)

What sort of things do you do on the PC at the moment? Mostly gaming? Video work, Photoshop?

The guys are right that the 970 seems a very attractive option but i would caveat that with the fact the 975 turbo's to 3.6GHz vs 3.46ghz on the 970. So gaming and Photoshop will be faster on the 975, video editing (software) tends to be faster on the 970.

I don't think there is a "wrong" choice, its just about getting the most benefit for the tasks you do... and a 975 or 970 will kick just about anythings ass :D

    Thanks for the replies.

It'll be used for gaming and, every so often, video editing... so I guess the 970 wins. Plus the bonus of boasting to my brother that my processor has SIX cores will really rattle him, considering he's only just got quad core after about a year of mocking... yeah yeah we're nerds, this stuff matters! :p

Can't wait for this to come - not looking forward to encountering watercooling for the first time though. Nightmares about thousands of pounds worth of water damaged hardware will probably haunt me for the next week or so, hehe. :D Seriously though... is it easy to maintain? I've read it's loud but volume's not an issue cos it won't be in my bedroom or anything, but I'm scared I'll get up one morning to find an i7 970 swimming across the dining room floor!

    970 it is :)

The H70 wont cause you any problems, its all sealed at the factory and wont require any maintenance.

Let's say all ppl who voted for SC2 as GOTY are all winners. I certainly would have been grateful to win the prize, but at least we won for the game.

At the risk of inciting another riot, I'm glad that a HH vet won. That's not to say that a non-vet isn't deserving but it's nice to know that someone who is genuinely passionate about computing is going to put it to use and not just play World Of Warcraft or check Facebook.

I think that's the point that Blibbax is trying to make.

Ok, Craig...time to draw for the PlayOn! since I need to drown my non-rig winning sorrows. :p
