A post on the official Google blog has revealed that Google is in the testing phases with the design of a self-driving car. Google is aiming to “prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions by fundamentally changing car use” with the technology that they have developed for a fully-automated vehicle.

The cars have collectively logged more than 140 000 miles of travel with the technology in place. Presently the vehicles use video cameras, laser range finders and radar coupled with detailed street maps compiled by the Google Maps vehicles to get around. The car is being developed with engineers from the DARPA Challenges, a race series for autonomous vehicles.
