LOS ANGELES--Microsoft is showing off more than a dozen new phones designed to work with its business telephony software, but the thing that caught my eye was the iPod-like scroll wheel on one of the models.

Microsoft isn't making the hardware itself, though the scroll wheel is on a reference design jointly developed by Microsoft, Polycom and LG-Nortel.

I dont see how anyone could have a valid patent on an object such as the wheel. Wheels have been used for an age as a sorting/selection device.

Yo fuck that I had a monitor a decade ago where you'd spin a wheel on the front to navigate the menus and push it in to select your option. No one even liked apple back then, let alone bought their audio players.

If you think apple invented the wheel you're a stupid piece of shit.

Apple lost the patent for it, didn't they? Or rather, Apples patent for that scroll wheel was denied from what I remember. So, technically, anyone could use the design. However, they cannot use the design for the internface (menu interface) without having to pay Creative for the rights as they have a patent for that (just ask Apple what it cost them to settle that lawsuit).
