The difference is that radeon 9600 cards are very cheap to produce, however the radeon 9500/9700 series are more expensive:duh:

Very true. The 9500 Pro was a brilliant card and helped ATi move into the mid level graphics card market but that came at a cost; the 9500 Pro cost too much to make so they sold through their stock of cards at the time and developed the 9600 series which was a cheaper and slower card unfortunately. The 9600 should have been branded the 9400 series in my opinion.

    um...

The 9600 is faster than the 9500. At least the 9600XT is.

    btw Shinjikun, check your PMs.

But the 9500 ya got a good chance to turn into a 9700 pro, in which case it'll toast a 9600XT. :)

Something for everyone looking in to a 9800 to remember these days is that there are a lot of companies using 128bit memory and dont really list it as such. Read the fine print as a 9800 with this memory is actaully slower than a 9700pro.

The only 9600 that rivals a 9500 Pro is the XT, and even in those cases it only surpases the 9500 Pro by one or two frames in some (not all) games (at least in the testing I've seen). The only advantage a 9600XT has is the clockrates, the 4 pixel pipelines is what really kills that card.

An overclocked 9500 Pro can blow any 9600 out of the water in my opinion. I'm not saying this because I own one ( ;) ) but that's what I've seen from testing of the 9X00 series.

Really, the 9600 in standard, pro and xt versions are faster than the radeon 9500 non pro (which in most of the cases it could be moddable) but the 9500pro has more or less the same performance of a radeon 9600xt because of the 8 pipes, however, when overclocking the core of a radeon 9500pro, to get the same performance on the 9600xt, you have to oc it and double the mhz, for example, if you overclock the core of your 9500pro 100mhz, to get the same performance on a 9600xt, you would need 200mhz of overclock so if you overclock, the radeon 9500pro outperforms the 9600xt.

edit: it seems that shinji and me were typing at the same time:lol:

The AIW 9700 Pro is still worth that price IMHO, I can play every game I have tried so far without much grief and can tweak it to compete and surpass many 9800 based cards in most of the synthetic benchmarks common today.

If the 9800 Pro is going for same as 9700Pro go for that make sure its not a crippled 9800 with 128Bit bus. Picked up a 9700Pro here in UK a couple of weeks ago for £80...and been dribbling ever since...was an upgrade from GF2MX ..

Only game that appeared to like 9600XT better was Doom 3 due 256meg of memory it defaults to High rather than Meduim for 9700's & 9800's with 128meg

    anyone finding 3dMark05 wierd

would'nt think my card should be mixing with 6800's? perhaps they is badly configured?

I realize that he is talking about a 9800p. I simply stated that if he wanted to save coin he could think about getting my 9700p.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really just got into gaming , I play RTS but they never really needed a powerful card, but the games comming out now are pretty demanding graphic wise so I need something to help me hold out :) till I get my new rig.

Ebay can be pretty shady at times, you have to be careful. Then again, it could be a legit deal too. Who knows.
