Harley, I can say that my 2k2 FPS have jumped up about 10 FPS, and are more stabile than they were before...I haven't had time to try them on 2k3, but 2k3 was much more stable to begin with so I'd guess the jump would be similar....
running 1600 x 1200 with all the bells and whistles on and maxed... no steering wheel or pit crew....drawing at 45 % 20 cars in front 12 cars behind...getting 65-70 fps at darlington racing online with 16 other racers, 80-85 fps at Darlington in test mode...

I also jumped up about 90 marks on the 3dmark2k3 test

    Radeon9500Pro & NonPro

Sorry for my English it is not my first language.

As explained before Radeon9500Pro and NonPro ie. simply 9500 are(were) different cards...Difference between them is not in R300 GPU but in...PCB!!!

Radeon9500Pro has all 8 pipelines opened but only 128bit memory bus Radeon9500 with the same bus has opened only 4 pipelines in its specification.

But there were samples in stock named Radeon9500 builded on the same PCB as...Radeon9700 ie. principially HW bus in its PCB is 256bit, while Radeon9500Pro had always PCB with 128bit in it. There is possibility for these 9500 NonPro cards to open both full 256bit memory bus and 8 pipelines but for 128MB memory cards only, if there is only 64MB of RAM it can be modded only to 9500Pro.

First it was made by HW modding ie. with soldering rezistors on GPU to other positions and with flashing BIOSes from 9700 cards...

But then appeared Softmods able to do it without any soldering flashing and so on and they are...succesfull.

I am owner of such 9500 NonPro 128MB Radeon btw. not Sapphire manufacter but Connect3D and with Softmod and new Cat. 3.2 it flawlessly works as 9700Pro (after o/c) or even 9800Pro (but without proper cooling I have no fierce to o/c it to 375 or even 400MHz that were annonced for 9800 cards.

I am lucky here in Europe is Radeon9500 128MB shipped for 1/3 price of branded 9700Pro....

I am lucky too because my card occurs no errors in visible picture at all not all cards 9500 after modding are flawless...

My 3DMark2001SE score went from 9980 for 9500 without modding and o/c to 15455 after simple applying of Softmod and gentle o/c to 325/310MHz core/memory and 3DMark2003 from 2980 to 5325 respectively.....

Conclusions: Only 9500 NonPro cards with 128MB RAM and with "old" PCB could be succesfully modded to full 9700Pro or even 9800
9500 with 64MB of RAM could be modded to 9500Pro not higher by any way.
9500Pro could not be modded to nothing better at all even if there is 128MB of RAM they use other PCB with 128bit bus
    only.
Some people after modding could have artifacts, distortions or even crashes....

    That's all

Does this mod have any benefits for gaming besides benchmarking?

    Re: Necrosis

I think I will have to see some sort of proof before I soft mod my drivers to do this. You know the old saying..."If it broke mod it, if you don't know screw it".

Excellent! That's all I have to say. After installing the soft mod, not only did my performance increase a bit, but the mod completely removed the buggy SMARTGART. And though SMARTGART may not be a problem for most, for Granite Bay mobo users like me, it seems to be one of the causes of the dreaded drop off bug. Since using the mod, I haven't yet had a single drop off, and AGP 8X and FW are both enabled.

    More help!

After downloading the new file and unzipping, I now have a file named ati2mtag.sys, which I understand is supposed to replace the file ati2mtag.sy_ . When I tried to replace the file and update driver, I got an error message "No Video Driver". Am I supposed to rename the new file so it ends in .sy_ ? I must be doing something wrong, when I did rename the file, and rebooted, Windows 2k would not boot, just repeated a boot attempt, over and over and over.

    help!

Are there any Nascar Racing 2003 Season gamers out there that has done this? I would like to know how this sim runs and if you got any "significant" increase in FPS doing this before I attemp it again.

    Thanks alot...

    Cheers!!!

After reading what Surgical had to say, I went and gave this a try. Followed all the instructions to the "T" and made sure all the lower case "j's" were dotted and let her rip.

    *CRASH*

Can't install the driver. After 2 more tries and getting a message saying that this was the wrong driver, I cleaned up and went back to install the standard 3.2's.

Conclusion: Guess this isn't for everyone. I also tried the SoftRadeon patches as well and they didn't and won't take.

Too bad though, it might have opened up a few more doors.

    Works Perfectly!

My install went PERFECT! Now if I could only find the benefit to this mod other than a XX points (or less) on my 3dmark03 score. To me, the 9700 already smoked in Battlefield 1942.

Harley I did a controlled benchmark with my original drivers using N2k3. I was using the older Omega 2.0.55 (3.0a ATI based) drivers. I did the 3.2 install with the mod. With 1280x960 res with 6xAA 4xAF i didn't gain anything from old drivers to new. With 1600x1200 with 6xAA 8x AF I lost 2 FPS. Not sure what the deal is but that's my results. And yes I did get the not official driver warning and it does say SV 2.1 in CP. I don't play antying else so I can't tell you if it improved or not in other titles.

Mtype, use 4X AA if your running at 1024*768, anything above I'd use 2X AA for newer games, also use 8X quality AF, or 16X if you think some games could handle it, for me though there is no big difference in quality from 8XAF to 16XAF but you would lose about 8-12fps.

No. That is the rv250, not the r300.
