Harley, Ray, I'm not sure why you are seeing a drop, I didn't get the same increase in 2k3 that I got in 2k2, but I did pick up about 5 fps with the mod versus the same driver without the mod...
The game also seems to look better, but I can't put my finger on just how it looks better....

so what does this mod actually do? besides SmoothVision 2.1

According to the riva tuner dude:
"I added this mode special to check R300->R350 info posted by www.tommti-systems.de. I must note that after this mod the driver uses R9800 specific code for sure and the control panel displays Smoothvision v2.1, but I didn't managed any boost comparing to R9700 mode. Don't spam me with question about that, address your questions to www.tommti-systems.de. "

    "I'm afraid that their "R350 = R300 + optimized drivers" formula is incorrect. "

    1000+ point boost

I used the modded ati2mag.sys. reinstalled my drivers.

    9700 pro--------- 3dmarks03= 3172
    softmod 9700 pro to 9800 pro----------- 3dmarks03= 4220

thats one hell of a boost just from a little file change.

    I'm very impressed.

    Excellent

Against my better judgement I decided to give this a crack. (Was using the Omega drivers which in my opinion are excellent).

    P4 2.4
    9700 Pro
    512 RDRAM
    120 Gg HD, etc
(The processer and 9700 are totally unclocked).

Now I.m not really one for benchmarks, depending on 'in game' to see if there was any difference, but in this case I thought I would try 3DMARK03. The score went from 4499 to 4800. Thats a pretty bloody big increase! Tested it on the usual games, Unreal 2, Splinter Cell, BF, M$ Combat Simulator 03 and everything is smooth and stable.

Now on the other hand I have always been very lucky with this setup (my first Intel chip since the first Pentium) and have never had any probs. If you were having problems before you tried this, it is unlikely that this will fix it, but it certainly made my system fly.

I will stick with this until the new Omegas come out, and then will think about changing again, yet again breaking my rule #1: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

From reading all of these post it seems this worked for some and not for others. I appreciate all the info on this but right now I think I'm just gonna stick with my stock 3.1 drivers and maybe down the road just buy the 9800 Pro.

    Cheers!!! :)

Guys, it WORKS! The gain is in AA + AF...

    Some statistic:
    Before: 3DMark 2001 4xAA + 8xAF + Quality (1024x768x32) --> 9,7xx
    After: 3DMark 2001 4xAA + 8xAF + Quality (1024x768x32) --> 10,8xx

The display tab now shows SmoothVision 2.1... And the performance boost is apparent! Results of better AA+AF algorithmn? Better utilisation of the memory controller? Bandwidth optimization?

    I'm so happy! :D :D :D

    http://www.maxdownloads.com/~ian/wizzard/

Check that link. There are different patches for the different conversions. He also does his editing of the sys file a little different. . . not exactly how different though. But they both have the same results.

if you had tried both wizzard's (maxdownloads link you posted) and tommits (which is the one I posted using in this thread) you'd see they both do NOT have the same results. The wizzard one above here basically only opens up the pixel shader pipes with no real overall affect on your cards score or performance in any other area. Here is my benches with both:

    Stock 3.2:
    pixel shader only 2k1 - 171.2/104.9
    2k1 - 14924
    2k3 - 4733

    Wizzard (maxdownload link above)
    pixel shader only 2k1 - 224.4/200.0
    2k1 - 14942
    2k3 - 4719

Tommit mod file (linked to in how to in first post of this thread)
    pixel shader only 2k1 - 217.0/107.2
    2k1 - 15,299
    2k3 - 4788

my results FWIW... just not much comparison between maxdownloads mod and tommits IMO Unless you're primarily looking for some kicken pixel shading ;)

I'm assuming its not worth even trying this mod with Omega's 3.2's?

Nevermind--I gather Omega's automatically mod something to 9800 and deliver a lightly higher score.

9700 Pro to 9800Pro - softmod???? An where i supose to get the F-BUFFER?????:hmm:

I understand R9500/128 256-bit memory to R9700 where the results it's interesting, but 9700Pro to 9800Pro....where is the "catch"?

Got to say shuki that one sure did work.

I'm running the GA-8INXP mobo with the 9700Pro and after your ati2mtag file, at first it did not work. So i went into BIOS and under "advanced chipset features" i changed the following:

    Switch DRAM Timing to Manual.
Switch DRAM Rash# to Cash# delay to 2
Switch Dram Rash# precharge to 2

save and reboot, using AGP 8X.

Ran the 3DMark2003 benchmark and went to 4952  Up 142 points. Nice, but will now run my games to see what happens. For now shuki baby, thats smoking.

    Thanks:lol:

    Went from 11,230 to 12,845!
I must have been doing something wrong before.

I don't know about performance gains (as I hadn't tested the card before -- just got it today), but I softmodded my 9700np (Sapphire) to a 9800, and things seem fine.

    9700 pro locking

on my soyo kt400 ultra motherboard i cannot run the 9700 pro at 8x. locks machine constantly as soon as it does anything "graphically challenging". must run it at 4x, with my board there is no way to change it from 8x to 4x within the bios. i rely on smartgart to put it down to 4x. is there anyone out there that knows how to re-enable smartgart with the modified atimtag file still installed to make use of the 9800 pro patch of goodness?

    thanks

after these 2 steps I dont see the '9700 pro' choice??? Am i doing something wrong??

    9. Click "Have Disk" and navigate to the "2KXP_INF" driver directory... click OK
    10. Now highlight the 9700 in the list (I have 4 there and it doesn't matter which you choose. I always choose the top one)
