OK i've been using this for ages.. years..

No problems aside from the service itself being down for whatever reason once in a blue moon so that's all good

about 2 months or more ago i had a problem for quite awhile where i couldn't get MSN Messenger to sign in at all. The only way i fixed this was to download Windows Live Messenger. Instantly solving the problem and hasn't have a problem since.

About a month ago, a customer of mine recently started having issues with MSN Messenger with exactly the same message as i was getting. Tried a few dozen things including removing it and then downloading the latest msn incarnation. With no go.

Then i directed them to Windows Live Messenger.

Now heres the thing, i wasn't able to stick around and wait for windows live messenger to complete (i was fairly confident that it would resolve the problem as it did with my own machine) and being they are on dialup, i wasn't willing to sit around for nearly 1-2 hours for it to download. (and they weren't willing to pay me for it).

I told them to give me a call if they had issues.

Well i just had the customer walk into the shop and state the after downloading and installing, there was still no green light. Gave exactly the same message.

Now at this point, i've done piles of searches on the internet for a cause of this with the message. Googling and searching the MS database. I can't seem to find anything that would relate to the problem... usually what i see about it is directly related to a router failing to handle things correctly or some stupid settings.

I've checked the firewall settings on messenger for the computer and it's been allowed/unblocked so that's not the issue there

The computer doesn't have Any for of anti-spyware/virus protection but i did a full scan myself and found absalutely not a thing wrong or out of place.

The machine itself does just fine if not absalutely great in anything else they want it to do.

They don't wanna pay a shitload of cash for highspeed thus they remain on dialup.

I'm actaully gonna guess that the dialup ISP may be doing something at thier end as my last resort. But frankly i'm completely puzzled over it.

Posting the full details of the error message would be a great help.

I've been an official tester for several years and there's not a problem that I can't find the solution to for messenger :)

if you have not done this, try it, Judas... search Microsoft knowledge based, newsgroups and/or the whole internet community by keywords,
in this case, using the exact error message as the keywords to search...

you've detailed every things to us, but you left out the important part which is the error message itself...

Msn Windows Messenger -> Options -> Connection -> Advanced Settings

    In the Internet Advanced Settings
Press Test tab of your Connection (I Use TCP)

Windows Live will make Tests and if there is a problem there it will fix it automaticaly

(Note: These is based for Windows Messenger Live)

    anything like these, JD...

"Signing in to MSN Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. 81000314"

"We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301"

if so, try remove the live messenger, reinstall msn messenger, and see, if he still having problem connecting then you may want to check and try these... (unless you've already found and tried it)

also, in the process try MSN Web Messenger - http://webmessenger.msn.com/ and see if you still have the connection problem?

    more on other cases...

You did not said what your error message is
    Is it Connection Errors ?

    Anyway
Maybe your Firewall has been affected

Uninstall your Firewall (not just disabling it or changing the settings) and try to Log in with the Messenger

What type of Firewall are you using ?

no router.. they are on dialup internet.

    and i solved the issue.

I did a full reset of the windows firewall, removed all plausibly blocked programs. And then i did a manual scan of the system for any oddities.

Low and behold i found a virus and a spyware program that was also causing msn mensseger and windows live messenger from fully connecting up.

Sweeped those away, opened messsenger and away we went.

those [firewall, virus, virus-like programs] are basic and the most common causes for connection problems.

    yeah..

but it's strange how it was effecting it even though there was no evidence that it was attempting to block messenger..
