Steve Ballmer, the chief executive of Microsoft, has his hands full. The next version of the Windows operating system, Vista, is finally about to arrive--years late and clouded by doubts that it might violate antitrust rules in Europe.

Misleading headline. The article has nothing to do with windows "nearing the end" and we all know that won't happen.

that's like asking if google is soon to get pulled off the stock market after buying YouTube

Mind you people, in order for microsoft to disappear, there has to be a VIABLE ALTERNATIVE [read: not mac or linux, as both suck in the "product availability/penetration" sector]

THe FUD is relentless, isn't it?...;) I sometimes wonder if people who use Macs would have near as much fun with them if they didn't feel as though they were "defeating Microsoft," or some such other assorted drivel, at the same time...;)

It's bizarre, really, the silly things people write and think these days, at least in some circles. This is very much like the "Vista will only let you upgrade your hardware ONCE" FUD that we've seen repeated so mindlessly over the last couple of days (which people like Paul Thurrott have taken pains to correct, fortunately.)

As for what the "EUC" thinks...I could care less about that, too. I don't need or appreciate "Big Brother's" helping hand when it comes to choosing my software and hardware--but thanks anyway just the same, EU. I think I can do a much better job on my own.

The majority of Windows users just think "A new Windows operating system? It looks so nice, so I love it!"

MS knows that everybody who doesn't know much about computers will just base how much they like it off the interface

If only the majority knew what we knew.. :p

I spoke with Jim Allchin a little over a week ago and I'll tell you something.

Right now they are scared shitless about the EU.

Everytime they ask the EU for full documentation on what they want MS to do to be compliant they get a nice letter full of legalese that boils down to "You know what to do."

When they ask the EU if this feature is OK, they get back another long letter with legalese that boils down to "Do you think it's ok?"

The EU group that handles this is just a bunch of money-wanting sons of whores who think their lawyers can just milk microsoft dry.

That last sentence is not courtesy of good old Jim. That's courtesy of me.

    europe can shove it.

if they don't like windows, they can use linux or mac.

I knopw i've said that before, and i'm gunna keep on saying it until they quit badgering M$ into diluting their product. What's next, are they going to demand that honda cars come with engine mounts that allow VW engines to be placed in there in case the consumer doesn't want a honda block, and onyl want's honda looks?

Please....shut up and worry about politics and leave people to choose their own damned software

Not that it would ever happen, but...it sure would be interesting to see what they would have to say if Ole Bill decided "Fuck it. Pull all distrubution and support for all MS products in the EU".

I'm betting that there would be a LOT of pressure put on the 'Officials' and that their tune would change considerably.

Just a quick note....not that I don't like Europe or Europeans.

I just don't like the branch of the EU government that's pulling this crap :(

Then again neither does good old Jim Allchin

I might develop some respect for Billy boy if he did that. Right now I just respect his moeny. If he came & told em to jerk off, they just wouldn't get the Vista, I would have to give the man props.
