    Yep! I'm gonna try :tongue

my current design is having four magnets to hold the nail in place, and then a pusher magnet at the bottom which you thrust upwards to push the nail out of the gun, with both physical force and magnetic force.

    only problem is...

It only works with metal objects.

The long brown bit at the bottom is a lever, and when you want to shoot the current object you are holding, you thrust it upwards, which will push the nail forwards. Donno how accurate it is.

the top will be a barrel, with magnets inside it, all around, all north.... should be able to keep the nail inside if the two magnets on the top are facing downwards and north ....

oh and maybe some way to rotate the magnets so that you can attract as well as repel and hold in mid air...

Uhh, yeah.. good luck with holding objects in mid air.. LOL @ you!

Good luck at grabbing anything further than 5 inches away that weighs more than a paper clip too.

    Definitely keep us updated..

Magnateic waves are too erratic to be able to hold anything up in the air...

They have magnetic levitating tops (the things that spin).. they can levitate for quite a few minutes at a time with a good spin. But being able to pic something up and have it levitate in a moving object like a gun shaped thing would be impossible without insanely strong electromagnets I think.

    You need.... http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm

I love the warning, especially for their $100 special
PS. If you think mega-magnets are scary, you should see some of the other stuff they sell ... fancy owning a piece of Trinite (fused sand from the Trinity nuclear test) - radioactive, of course!

If that's too tame, how about a piece of Uranium ?

Take the easy route and just buy one of these.

    EDIT-

    LOL @

    Our Most Powerful Magnet

If you really need an unbelievably powerful magnet, here it is.
Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in homemade accelerators, magnetic beam amplifiers, etc. Beware - you must think ahead when moving this magnet.
If carrying it into another room, carefully plan the route you will be taking. Computers & monitors will be affected in an entire room. Loose metallic objects and other magnets may become airborne and fly considerable distances - and at great speed - to attach themselves to this magnet. If you get caught in between the two, you can get injured.
We can only ship this magnet by ground UPS - it cannot be shipped via air as it will interfere with the aircraft's navigational equipment.
    WARNING!
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NO TOY AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS!
    Approximate size is: 2-3/8" x 2" x 1-1/4".
This magnet is also rated at Grade N45 - the most powerful there is.
    Ni-Cu-Ni Plated with Matte finish.

    OMG I want one!

Pick up a physics text book. I think you will realize magnets are not the way to go.

Hmm, I wasn't aware the human race had developed a gravity gun yet..

If so I need to go back to school.

Well actually the idea is quiet plasible though not even the most powerful magnet would work. Because what holds it in prevents it from leaving. Also the I have seen an electromagnetic device that was probably the size of about 4 cars that could only suspend a spider in mid air (no grav) in a circle about the size of my fist.

Good idea but it will not work.

As far as Rail guns go I dunno yet about that because the larger electromagnetic field (needed to lauched and object) the the more every metal object will pull towards it. I also saw a working railgun that fired a piece of aluminum (about the size of my forearm) straight through a tank.it was very large though. We have not even begun to shrink this technology yet because it simply is not possible with the tools we have today without making a safety hazard. What we need is some type of material that can contain magnetic fields (what a thought) and also a very compressed version of electromagnets. A very larger power suply would also be needed.

The millitary has probably been working on something similar to this for some time like how after the predator movie came out and a team was created to recreate the same suit from the movie. I know, its insane, but the millitary pretty much thinks they can create any type of weapon with enough money and enough bright people. The truth is they can.

Yeah I saw that too- it could levitate frogs and whatnot too. I believe it was used for nasa experiments in a no-G environment and things like that.

That thing was huge, it's power consumption was some crazy amount, can't remember.

Hey, could i make the entire inside of a cylinder an electromagnet? because if i could that would be sweet, and there would be no need for precision in where i put the magnets.

    my stupid..

    That would be a solenoid.

    VERSION 3.

The extremely powerful solenoid electromagnet at the top of the barrel will be activated by a seperate switch, which will also turn off the bottom electromagnet. This button will redirect the power of the bottom electromagnet to the solenoid in the middle of the barrel so that it will be more powerful. This will increase accuracy, and since the sides are not pushing the magnet in any direction except for in the middle, it will make the gun ALOT more accurate.

    This design WILL work...

When i get the time to make it.
