My friend jsut bought a 3GHz P4C along with a whole new system. Now the bad part: He bought a case and PSU combo for 30$. He bought 1024M of generic PC4000 ram for 110$, and a generic mobo for 50$.

    He bought a r9800pro 256M, a audigy 2, 4 36G WD raptors (But he didn't want to buy a good RAID card for 4 drive RAID 0).

The whole system only has stock coolers, and the 3 fans that came on the r9800pro, the stock retial P4 cooler, and the PSU.

EDIT: oh yeah, he bought a pioneer A-06 DVD-RW/DVD+RW/CD-RW burner too.

Sheesh- More money than brains comes to mind--

He needs to do a good afternoon's worth of detailed research before buying all that stuff- At least he got half of his purchases right...  He just forgot all the important stuff- And I think it's from lack of knowledge, not money- am I right?

yeah, he's been saving up for 2 years to get the absoloute best stuff he could buy. He doesn't belive me that a 2.4C is almost as good and it would be better to get a good mobo and ram. Drop the videocard down to a 128M version and get a good enemax psu.

He still has a bunch of good stuff (9800!). Probably run into PSU problems first. But I agree, good mobo and RAM with the 2.4C would have been money better spent.

Gah!! This is enough to make my left eye twitch... :hmm:

For the price of what he shelled out for the 3Ghz, he could of bought a 2.6Ghz and top of the line RAM for the same price with some change left.

Ugh, I could go on.... But I'm afraid it would damage me to think about it any further.

My mom did just that, she paid 800$ for a computer from circut city that was slower than a 200$ computer I was going to sell her. My sister bought the computer and brought it to her house and she plays verious games on it without any problems, but my mom it always commenting on how slow her computer is ever for regular applications.

I did a bunch of testing with her retail computer and it was terrible compared to the 200$ one.

Why not just get a ABIT NF7-S 2.0, XP3200+, 512MB of OCz PC4000 Dual Channel RAM, and a nice Enermax PSU, with a switech heatsink, and save like half his money lol

Wow, he just installed the motherboard without any spacers so it was right agenst the metal of the case. He put eveything in and tried to turn it on. The fans spun up for half a second and then they shut off agian and thats all the computer did.

I think he killed all of it. :(

Sounds like the MoBo is grounded... Tell him to add the spacers and try again, hopefully it's still alright.

Do you mean the back of the PCB is actually touching the metal of the case? (including the ends of the soldered connections) Or do you mean the metal around the mounting holes on the motherboard are touching the spacers? It seems like that would instantly short it out and it would be dead- as well as possible damage to CPU/ram, and all onboard components-- Sheesh- what a mo.

Don't tell me, you friend (how old btw ?) forgot to by the mouse/keyboard and monitor as well ;)

Hopefully the PSU kicked in and protected the mobo.
