I just purchased a new system yesterday, here are the specs:
    P4 2.8c
    Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB
    512 PC3500 Ram
    250GB HDD
    Xaser3 Case

The case comes with 7 fans and after installing everything the system runs very hot (idle temperatures are low 50's for the CPU and low 30's for AMBIENT) I took off the thermal pad and applied silicon grease last night because I could not find my AS3 :( Taking off the thermal pad and using the grease took off 5 Celcius from before but the temperature is still too high in my opinion. Would a new heatsink and AS3 improve the temperatures much?

do you know what kindoff fan you have on the cpu?
What temp does it go to when do play games or benchmarks ?

I dont think the temp is gonna be a problem

my 1ghz duron is runing at 60 idle but it is 30 outside lol

the scary thing is intel cpu rtort temps "cooler" than thay actually are by intel specs.. intels run much hotter than amds.....

for lower temps .... i reccomend you mich lap the heatsink and then use AS3if you not over clocking the stock hsf should surfice....

be sure to apply the as3 like this

I'm using the stock HSF that comes with the CPU (2700rpm)

Scary thing is I just played a game of SOF2 and the temp was at 60!

Your ambient temps seem fine. I think you need more case air flow or to change the heatsink or reseat or something.

2 points here - Firstly, what m/board are you running, if its an abit board chances are its reporting temps about 10 degrees hotter than they actually are, secondly, Intel chips are practically impossible to burn out, they have an inbuilt cut off that throttles them back to half speed if the temps rise way too high - believe it or not the throttle threshold on the P4c chips is about 135 degrees!!

As long as you have no stability issues I wouldn't worry about it...My P4 2.4b is o/c to 2.72 temps are 51 idle/65 load with an ambient of about 30

I'm running an Albatron 865PE Pro

Thanks for all the replies and I'll probably be purchasing a HSF soon along with AS Ceramique.

Good board, but not sure how accurate it is with temps.

Good Idea. If you are really concerned about temps, spend the money and get either the SLK 900-U or my personal favorite and choice, the Swiftech MCX4000. You can use either one with a medium to low RPM fan and still keep the temps down around 30c idle 37c load and that's if your overclocking.

Well I just bought some AS Ceramique and it brought the temps down to 45-47 idle so I'm halfway there now to just purchase a good HSF! The intel stock is covered with crap too from that dam thermal pad and silicon so hopefully I'll get good results!
