Well dunno I'm not great but try to get something in the zone of 100 thousand km or something... That'd be a solid car and make sure it's had a full service history with no hiccups.

I'm not a driver but as a passenger I prefer the roomier 306. A relative has had a 306 for about six years and it has been running well. If you get one that has been driven in a northern climate then check especially for rust on the break discs. Here in Sweden we use salt on iced roads and Peugeot doesn't seem to protect the breaks for nordic conditions the same way as some other manufacturers do. Both 206 and 306 standards seems quite okay to drive.

on cars newer then about 1991, it's MUCH easier, since thigns aren't mechanical linkages anymore ;)

Check the INSIDE of the bumper covers and rocker panels [crawl under the car] for glued up cracks, as this is evidence of damage/wrecks [my civic had the rear fender glued back together and painted over].

get it going 20 MPH and take your hands off the wheel and make sure it rolls straight.

REMOVE THE FLOORMATS to check for rust/mildew/mold/ratty carpet/etc...my camaro had antifreeze engrained in the floormats from the leaky heatercore, and cigarette burns under the rear mats.

If it's a stick, make sure it won't pop out of gear all by itself or anything dumb, and if it's a auto, get it to highway speeds and count how many times it shifts to make sure all the gears work, I've seen people program a reprogram around a bad gear rather then replace the tranny before.

Other then that...check the usual...mileage, electric [all lghts, especially head/tail/brake, as there are legal issues there], Heat, A/C, stereo [check that all 4 speakers work], check the windows, etc etc....that's about it!

is there even a rear driven version of the 206? not that i'm aware of..
I had a 206 for a few months, it was 1.9 Diesel, yep the slow one.
Came out right before the Hdi models. I recon for a "small" car they handle pretty well and looking at similar cars i'd still go for the 206.
the 306 is bigger but that's about the only advantage I can think off.
    My 2 cents

    and as a request:

    the 206

    and the 306

I always thought the 206 was a nice looking car.. the 307 for me was awfull... just weird and unbalanced looking..

That is the first I have seen the 306- looks pretty good.. strange though it looks like an older model almost for some reason. It has a "VW'ish" look to it.. like an older rabbit or golf from that angle except the headlight.. Not bad though.. a lot better looking than most little hatch backs. It looks like it has a lot of potential in the aftermarket for ground affect. It could look pretty sporty with the right package. A nice aggressive front clip.

yeah I am sure it's a good car mechanically- just something about the way the windshield connects to the hood (bonnet)... just looks like it is going backwards or something.
