If memory serves me right, "graphics accelerator" is the term that was once used for graphics cards because they were capable of taking over some operations that would otherwise be performed by the CPU (basic stuff like "move rectangle from here by vector x"). Instead of doing all the calculations and writing the result into the graphics card, the CPU would simply tell a capable graphics card to perform the operation itself and proceed with its work, achieving greater performance and hence the term. With the advent of graphics solutions that were fully programmable (instead of providing a set of fixed high level functions), the term GPU emerged and substituted graphics accelerator, which for a while lingered on to denote the old, obsolete, non programmable chips and then fell into disuse as all of the available and relevant chips belonged to the programmable "class". Apparently, it has now been out of use for so long that it's being reinvented.
Accelerators were cards that paired with your graphics card. Instead of the vga output of the graphics card going to your monitor it would go into your accelerator. The monitor would then connect to the vga out of the accelerator. You could even buy two and do SLI, but that was something I never got to try. I had a Diamond Monster II 3dfx VooDoo2. GPU term basically came about when graphics and accelerators were put into one chip. QB
Today at work it popped into my head that the "A" in APU is for Accelerated... So I guess accelerators are still a viable term. GPU was coined by Sony in 1994 with their PlayStation. SLI was 3dfx then NVidia bought them out.... It was cool going down memory lane QB
