theyre not actually out yet, but google gave away around 60k units to beta testers. as for the netbook its self.... it seems very lacking. as it stands, all it can do is browse the net, but even that its not so good at. sure, everything loads and works, but none of its quick. if a page more advanced then a couple lines of text loads, it locks up the system for a half a second while the page loads. its piss poor at streaming videos too. 420p on youtube in normal size drops frames, 360p full screen drops frames, but in normal size works ok. oh, and printing is an absolute joke, as the netbook cant connect to a full network. itll connect to a wifi network no problem, but it cant see or interact with anything on the network. if you want to print something, you either need a google cloud ready printer, or you need to install an app on the netbook and your main computer, so you can essential remote desktop into the main to print. ive heard there working on a full remote desktop app. if i can essentially have my full desktop/network anywhere in the house, i can see this netbook as being damn nice. as a stand alone unit though? its pretty meh.
I'm surprised at what you say about Youtube playback, given that many mobiles can do that now. Highly disappointing.
ya, but you know, its still in beta. a couple decent driver tweaks may solve that issue. hell, my old tnt2 could probably stream videos at that res with ease. i just looked up the listed system specs for the cr-48. Intel Atom N455 1.66ghz, Intel GMA, 2gb DDR3 1333. i just went and tried video again, youtube actually works fine at 480p full screen. hulu and gametrailers.com both fail miserably.
They are still accepting applications for these beta Chrome netbooks.... if you would get one or not is another story. Nice PSU, anonemus.... congrats
Thanks for the info, DL. The hardware isn't that incapable, I'm sure they final software will perform better. Still, it sounds less useful than a "normal" netbook of the same specs.
Well i think a power supply upgrade is for a long time so why not,and yes maybe crossfire once i get a new mobo because this current one is 16x and other slot is 4x... and i got the TX750 for 90$ CAN ^^ (NCIX ftw)
I want these bargains over here, lol. It often seems impossible to get good hardware with a decent discount in the UK - sometimes OCUK clearance stock is ok, but even then, not a great deal. And ebay tends to be as expensive as new...
lol the other day i bought an LG 23" that is normally 209$ but got it at 149$...and its still on special around 140-170,Also that HD6870 is fucking crazy runs most of my game on max no lag! (played AvP3 non-stop and some good running games too lol)
nice cards arent they first thing i did when i installed mine (naturally) was max everything and see how it coped, was quite surprised when things didnt just grind to a halt just wish they folded properly..
I think it was an engineering decision. With 5000 and 6000 series, AMD was designing primarily a graphics chip whereas Nvidia was a bit more ambitious and wanted 400 and 500 series GPUs to do everything. That said, your GPU should still fold way faster than your CPU, so I wouldn't call it lost for GPGPU purposes.
This has been the case even since G80. His GPU will earn more PPD, but it will also consume more power I'd imagine that the PPW would be higher on the GPU, nonetheless. And remember to check the link in my sig
