What are your temps? I hover around 50c idle and 65-67c load. And thats pretty good for stock air on these cards! I was looking into water cooling for this beast and for my future x2 upgrade.

So i went looking at their step up and isn't a very good deal. I could buy another 320 S/C cheaper than an 8800GTX. Pretty sure 2 3200 S/C's would be better than one GTX.

true, but not by much. in terms of clock speeds. remember though, that when in SLI, you're still only using the total memory of one card, in your case, it would be 320Mb. whereas a GTX, you'd have 768Mb of vRAM ;)

I don't understand the benefit of the step-up program. You would spend the same amount of money if you skip the lower card and just buy the GTX first, right? 90 days isn't really long enough for it to be really useful.

no, the step-up program lets you pay the difference between you present card and the card you wish to step up to.

in some cases it's really beneficial when you pay just like 20 bux + shipping for your old card to your new card. when the GTX first came out, people who had the GX2 cards were paying less than $100 to step-up to the GTX. sometimes, people have to pay more. it all depends on what the difference in price is between the card you have and the card you want.

90 days is useful if you think about it. say you want to build your system right now, but you dont' have all the money you need for the card you desire. you can get a hold-me-over card for the time being, and before your 90 days are over you can utilize the step-up program to get that nice card you wanted originally :)

    So in Lowfat's case,
    320 SC card = $320
    GTX = $620

    620 - 320 = $300 to use Step-up

So when you told him to use Step-up and get for example a GTX, how is that different from just buying the GTX to begin with?
$620 vs. $300+(whatever he paid for the 320 SC) would be pretty much the same.

Actually it would probably be cheaper for Lowfat to have just gotten the GTX, since evga's price is so much higher than other stores!

    I guess that's it then.

But if I count shipping cost, and the hassle of doing the whole swap, and the fact that you'll be without a card since they don't cross-ship . . . I'd rather just wait till I had the money. Though personally I wouldn't ever make myself broke for a PC upgrade any way, negating the need for a hold-me-over . . . but maybe other people would.

yea, there are those people who have to spend basically the same amount than what the card costs to begin with. other people have been upgrading their 7950GTs to 8600GTSs. the only real difference between those two cards in terms of performance is the DX10 support.

So I got me a GTS for a couple weeks now, and it is bloody fast! Everything's like 3 times faster now, with higher detail settings than before. It's simply an enormous difference! That's what I call an upgrade :)

Only thing I don't like is on the 2D side of things... Scrolling up and down in anything is not perfectly smooth like it was on my old ATI card. I've got another temporary computer with a 6800 in it which does the same thing, so I'm fairly certain it's a driver issue with Nvidia. Oh well.

did you get the 320Mb or the 640Mb GTS? are going to use the step-up program to get a better card within the next 90 days...assuming you got an EVGA card.

I got the 320. I don't want to pay more than $300 on a single part.

And no, no step-up for me. I would have gotten the faster card to begin with if I wanted it. No point in having a slower card for the first <90 days.... But I did get an Evga, low price at Mwave and great warranty too!
