I'm looking to build a new Shuttle system but I've been out of the loop on hardware for a little while. I need to pickup a new card for 16x PCI Express. I'm just not sure what to get, in the past I could look for a card in the $300 range and find something good but now the cards are cheaper.

Can I get some suggestions from you guys on what to get / look for?

I just heard of the 3850 coming out. I would need this card mainly because my Shuttle case can't support the dual slot cards. I just can't find any exact information on this card yet.

go for the 3800 series when theyre out, but wait for reviews before you do, im not trusting AMD/ATi one bit. they effed up bad and Nvidia is THE best to buy, theres no opposition on any level, the value, extreme, and best market is all dominated by the 8800GT

the 2900 series was the saddest thing ive ever seen....

So far, it looks like there are three 3850 cards and three 3870 cards available at ncix.com. There's a very small review already of one the 3850 card there. The reviewer seems happy with his purchase.

HD3870 is doing an excellent job..

if you want crossfire, make sure your not using more the 4gb ... (hopefully ati has a fix for this soon)

Whats up with your crossfire and 4GB of RAM? I have no problems here with it.

Weird, seems alot of hardware runs into problems with lots of RAM, first it was sound cards ,now its videocards :bleh:

    Least they are getting resolved.

Just got my new HD 3870 delivered today. After swapping out my now redundant X1900XT and working through the inevitable dramas with drivers everything is now back up and running (knock on wood).

First impressions are very favourable, Crysis with all the settings on High and a screen resolution of 1680x1050 could only manage 10-14FPS with the X1900 XT running the show. The HD 3870 immediately bumped that figure up to 25-30FPS with the same game settings. Furthermore it did it without making an almighty racket. Anyone who has ever owned an 1900 series card knows that while it can crunch some pretty impressive numbers it does it at a cost. Namely your hearing is in serious danger as when the card is under heavy load the fan does a wonderful impersonation of an F-111 taking off. Not so the 3870, which goes about its business with barely a whisper which was one of the key reasons I got it in the first place.

So all in all I'm a happy camper, the 8800GT might be able to outperform the HD 3870 but you need to be able to get one first. In Australia there appears to be some serious back logs of orders. For my needs the 3870 offers the best combo of performance/price @ availability.

i never had an issue with the x1900's.... they were only annoying as hell when you first fired up the computer and didn't slow down until you got into windows... at which point even durring the heavy gaming, with overclocks.. it never got that loud..

the hd3870's i've got now are probably as loud when you fire up the machine... but emediately drop after post...

to me, they don't even feel like they are moving air... you can't really feel and air moving out of the back of the slot coolers.. where as the x1900's were moving some damn good air....

Replace stock coolers Judas, they suck pretty bad..... its a single copper block that really doesnt cool that well..... get some Thermaltake DuOrbs on there and rip up the mhz, dont forget to flash your BIOS to the unlocked one.

Is there a Bios for the HIS 3870 and is it worth flashing the bios. I have a gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard with 4 gigs of OCZ ram, ageia physix card and a bigfoot nic, with a Q6600 intel chip. The case is an antec 900 and a antec 1000watt true power quattro psu. and enough fans to make my cat nervous to walk by the computer. also a HIS 3870. crysis runs on medium and I just dont see the improvement everyone else is talking about. any suggestions.

Have you tried it without the Ageia card installed?
