I'm sorry to hear this, but on the other hand, I'm surprised that they persisted in making new versions for as long as they did. I'm using it, but I can't remember when I downloaded or what version, as everything I use existed in 2.x.

the only thing I adored.... was the milkdrop visual effects... it was simply fantastic..

I might have to download it just to save it for when I feel like watching something cool as hell cause I don't know of any other visual effects system like that, that works with any other media player.

It's the oldest Windows mp3 player I still use. Shame it is going away.

    my first post in awhile.

there is no other player that i would rather use than winamp for a aio player. however, winamp has been bloatware for some time. it also has online services that can be entertaining. i use it to watch the joe rogan experience when i feel the urge. it works great and is very stable. it used to have lots of pron access too, which was a nice plus to be able to jam out and watch pron right from the player.

for simple music listening foobar has been my choice of late.

maybe someone will buy and revive winamp?

Or they release the source and make it GPL.

I've been using it on Android and will probably keep doing so. Otherwise on my main system I had to ditch it for reasons of audio quality as WinAMP couldn't keep up as I got both better sound card and speakers. But the player has otherwise been great. Foobar2000 that I'm using for music now is the other way around, great sound but in serious need of a thought out interface. If someone could take WinAMP and replace the playback/decoder with that of Foobar then I'd love that.

I've heard talk for years now that the WinAMP team haven't had a coder that could dig into the original code. So that a total rewrite was going to be necessary in order to make real improvements, which AOL was never going to fund.

Best download and save the installation file then. I've noticed that google play has the habit of removing apps that aren't avaliable anymore, without asking.

Bugger. I've been a fan of Winamp for years (can't even remember when or why I switched). I love the sleek bar at the top of my monitor in the centre; it's so unobtrusive, unlike any other media player I've known.

It may not be "entirely" dead yet. Seems to be a rumour floating around that AOL is in talks with Microsoft to sell them Winamp and Shoutcast.

I stopped using it years ago, back when it started to bloat up with features I didn't want.
