An office mate and I noticed that search suddenly stopped working in Windows. Restarting the service didn't help, rebuilding indexes didn't help, rebooting didn't help. Apparently, at fault is some cloud service that couples Bing and Windows search. The problem will probably resolve itself soon enough, but if you're impatient or don't care for Bing integration in the first place, you can turn it off by following these instructions.

    Short version (without pictures):
    • in Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search
    • look for the BingSearchEnabled DWORD; if it exists, set it to 0, otherwise (as was my case) create it (it will be 0 by default)
    • do the same for CortanaConsent (for me, it was already there and set to 0)
    • reboot.
    Enjoy search.
