All it does at this time is allow you to reserve a copy and set up a notification for when it's officially available.

If you don't want to deal with the reminder icon in the task bar from now until Jully 29th, You can remove it. You can still get Windows 10 for free without reserving it. To get rid of the notification, just uninstall KB3035583.

BTW, if you DO uninstall the Windows 10 Update as mentioned above, you'll need to watch for it to be added again during subsequent updates and uncheck the box if you don't want it back. ;)

One more note about the Windows 10 Update Reminder: It will most likely continue to show up during Windows Updates. So, if you don't want to be bothered with it any longer after you've reserved your free update to Windows 10, you can simply HIDE the update reminder. MS will be sending out an email anyway when the OS is ready to download and install.

No, not at all. It's pure marketing. If I remember correctly, you have a year from release to perform the free upgrade and that's the only limitation.

I'll probably do it too. Dunno if it means I get to download a copy and keep for later update or if I have to update at once though. Not so sure if I want to update at launch, I prefer to let it mature a bit first.

Regardless of how Microsoft chooses to handle the Windows 10 Upgrade, you DO have an option for creating an ISO image from the downloaded files. Here's a link to how to do that...

I'm hoping that MS will offer the ISO as a stand alone download because there are situations like my parents and elsewhere where they have a DSL connection that's only a 3 meg download (with most times much slower) because of the location of where they are at. I'm hoping that I can create an ISO throw it on a stick and then bring it up there where they have two laptops, two desktops and a tablet. It's going to take forever to download if it needs to be done individually.

Is W10 a good idea for tablets that run 8.1 ?

What's an "N" edition? I gather my W7 isn't since I don't know what it is. Noticed this when I tried the program to create an ISO and where I should chose what edition I wanted.

N edition doesn't contain Windows Media Player. It was made in order to comply with some EU regulations.

I've just installed Windows 10 on my Surface Pro 3 and there are a few differences but nothing that seems off-putting.

The system started in desktop mode, which didn't work well for me, particularly as I don't have the keyboard, but a swipe from the right edge allowed me to change it to tablet mode. Once there, however, software changes to full-screen mode and the on-screen keyboard does exceptionally well with predictive text.
In Edge I haven't found that swiping to go back works but I probably missed something somewhere, like a setting. Swiping between applications, however, still works just fine.
Overall there are just differences to get used to but, of course, it is a new operating system after all.
