Didn't know that...well, the ammount of files in .rar form are more than the .ace form....well at least the stuff I see online

Ace is technically just as good a compaction routine as RAR, it just never got the foothold in the market RAR did.

WinZip although probably "the standard" is technically the worst format.

There are other lesser known but quite powerful compression apps, stuffit (Mac originated from aladdin systems) springs to mind.

As far as ZIPs go, I just use the built in WinXP software. When it comes to other types of files, though, I'll use whatever I need. I prefer WinACE (I like the interface better), but the version I have doesn't work with the latest RAR types, so I often end up using WinRAR.

I will never again use WinZIP.

To which "market" are you referring to? The only time I usually see RAR files is when...well.. ;)

Commercial sites that offer downloadable files usually have them in ZIP format or in a self-extracting EXE.

WinRAR, because it works much better and has better compression and options. WinZip is kinda outdated.

RAR offers higher compression that ZIP, and compression comparible to ACE. the market im referring to is the "underground" areas. and its even used alot now on commercial sites, though not to the level of ZIP which is probably due in part to MS incorporating winzip within the new OSes and as most of us know, the general public wouldnt know a RAR from a JPEG therefore most companies would rather "play it safe".

From my own viewpoint, WinRAR3x handles all three now, so I dont see the need to install anything else, its fast, rock solid, efficient and offers high compression.

I used to prefer winrar then moved back to Power archiever 8, as its list of supported formats is silly, for compression purposes I mostly use .zip as most of my friends use Xp & are novices, if i sent them a rar they would scratch head & they have my mobile number! lol (most of time problem is between chair & keyboard)

Hey can we have a vote button for other, as well as the whatever vote

I use all three. But in reality, I basically use WinACE...since it supports all versions of everything, and supports ultra-high compression...and has never made or extracted one corrupt file...yet.
