For all your design work and writing/editing on DH? Is it The nehalem EP or something else? just curious to know what you use as I am guessing you get everything free and can pick the best stuff you want.
I remember the first time I came to DH and I thought all tech sites were like black text on white pages and I said "wow" - the level of design on DH stands out a mile. Just my view. Im always curious as to how all this stuff is put together and the minds (and hardware) behind it. What server(s) do you use?
Considering the stuff he tests all comes in pieces i'd say so As far as i'm aware Z has several rigs that he uses for testing, isn't a Mac you use for everyday Z? I know you have several
from what I can pick up I think he uses Macs for work and then plays on the pc stuff he tests for the reviews.
From what I have heard he doesn't use any system. He's like Chuck Norris; when he thinks about a post it will pop up on the forum :O
Quite a boring answer im afraid guys. I have 2 high specification 17 inch Macbook pros (with 8 gig of ram and 3ghz CPUs) I use in different parts of the building which are both hooked into the same networked drive for DH work - such as writing and designs, so if I move about I can sit at another machine and continue where I left off -- I don't have loyalty to macintosh, I just rate OSX for ultimate stability and find it is a better operating system for what I need to get the job done faster and more proficiently. (I also have a gaming system hooked into a 30 inch Samsung screen I reviewed nearby for any time I get to test engines and stuff (its a 965EE overclocked with a 295GTX in it most times). I have a room of PC hardware which changes daily. reviews in flux - systems in mid build, cards, cpus and motherboards everywhere. Looks like a bomb hit it basically and can be quite scary if we are doing roundups. At home I have another couple of macintosh laptops and a mac mini and about 5 PCs in almost every room all wired into a gigabit network. (not 5 pcs in each room, in total!) Our business servers? they are in texas right now, but we are planning a huge move shortly as we go through about 50 terrabytes a month now - but more on that later.
man i'd call a room like that a wonderland..... Allan sure sounds like he has his hands full constantly..... thanks alot
I dont often get the chance to game so limit that to bashing away on the various Guitar Hero games... my systems are more about specfic purposes and built around them. There is the review system which has whatever it needs installed... then there is my main work system which I try to make as quiet and energy efficient as possible with maximum stability and performance. Finally I have my HTPC which was built to be low noise and high audio quality. I guess I get my fix of high spec stuff from the amount of components we review
